    BlackSky imagery shows extensive blue-green algae blooms in Lake Okeechobee.

    The stormwater runoff from Hurricane Ian may create a perfect environment for increased blooms this summer. As a precaution, the US Army Corps of Engineers has shut the Port Mayaca lock and dam to prevent the algae from contaminating the St. Lucie Canal, as the algae can be toxic to humans and animals.

    BlackSky imagery shows the FSO Safer off of the coast of Yemen, with the arrival of the Ndeavor support ship on June 2nd to assist with salvage operations.

    The United Nations fears that if the Safer’s 1.1 million barrels of oil were to empty into the Red Sea, it could result in an ecological disaster 4 times the size of the Exxon Valdez spill.

    The Popocatépetl Volcano, locally known as ElPopo, recently had its first major eruption since the year 2000. BlackSky imagery shows plumes of smoke billowing out of the crater, which have been measured to be up to 4.5 miles high!
